Your fetus (officially promoted from embryo this week) is now about the size of an Irukandji jellyfish, whose bell measures just 1 to 2 cm. Do not let the size fool you. Its sting is one of the most painful in the sea.
The Irukandji is roughly the size of a fingernail and nearly invisible in the water, yet its sting can trigger Irukandji syndrome: waves of pain, vomiting, and a sense of impending doom so distinctive that doctors list it among the symptoms.
It was proven to cause the syndrome in 1964 when researcher Jack Barnes deliberately stung himself, his son, and a lifeguard to make the case. Science was less cautious in the sixties. The species now carries his name.
Meanwhile, inside you
Your fetus this week is thankfully harmless and busy with better work: fingers and toes are starting to separate, and the tail they briefly had is beginning to disappear.
