Welcome to the third trimester. Your fetus now weighs about 900 grams, the weight of a platypus, an animal so strange that when the first specimen reached Europe, scientists suspected a hoax stitched together from other creatures.

It is a mammal that lays eggs, has a duck-like bill, webbed feet, and venomous spurs on the males' hind legs. It has no stomach, and the females sweat milk through their skin rather than feeding through nipples.

Strangest of all, it hunts with its eyes, ears, and nose shut, using its bill to detect the faint electrical fields given off by the muscles of prey buried in the mud.

Meanwhile, inside you

Your fetus this week has a brain that is growing rapidly and folding into the wrinkles that make room for billions of neurons. Their lungs are still immature, but improving every day.
